[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Is Epson still in the printer market?

stefan@hpausla.HP.COM (Stefan Ziemer) (11/18/88)

A friend of mine was told by a dealer that Epson are pulling out of the
printer market. I was under the impression that this is where Epson built its
reputation. I would be most suprised if it is true. Can anyone verify this
bizarre notion.

She was enquiring about an Epson GQ3500 (the Ricoh engined laser from Epson).
I am wondering if Epson may be trying to just pull out of that market.

Either that or this dealer is trying to get my friend to buy a more expensive
printer.

Did the dealer sell Epson printers, or a competing brand?

Epson makes printheads and assembles printers at their plant in Hillsboro,
Oregon (Portland suburb). If the company were going out of the printer
business something would have hit the local news by now.

As a matter of fact, this summer Epson just doubled the size of the Hillsboro
plant, so it seems unlikely that they're going out of the printer business
any time soon.

Perhaps the model your friend was looking at is scheduled to be discontinued.
