Hello fellow computer fanatics... The Adlib company from Boston, MA has introduced the MPU401 and Adlib boards to the addition of the IBM sound card. I have recently purchased the Adlib and the composer package, hoping that 11 voices will daunt my Amiga 1000 and Sonix/ Deluxe Music/Instant Music/AudioMaster packages. Well, the software is decent and close to par of Instant Music with functions of DCMS. What the Adlib board lacks is synthesized intsruments, but that's understandable for being new. Hopefully, PC users will want standards introduced, just like the video formats (ILBM/IFF). SMUS files are a link, but the complexity of DCMS is lost when DCMS makes a SMUS for Instant Music/Sonix. How about exchanging sound files so the PC could catch up to the years of experimentation on the Amiga and (ahem!) ST and other enchanced MIDI's. I have no clue what sound chip(s) are being used with the Amiga and the PC sound card, which would make this feat unattainable. The Adlib has a fantastic drumkit (bassdrum,snare,tom-tom, hi- hat and cymbal) with weak library of other sounds. The advantage to this board is the number of channels (and stereo separation - each channel is split to left and right - unlike the Amiga where voices are dedicated to a channel). On the lighter side, does anybody have demos for the Adlib board consisting of music files, new instruments, PD programs/source that utilize the board. I know I will soon tire of just being able to listen to games using the board (but I wouldn't mind other companies besides Sierra to publish arcade-quality games up to par with the Amy (and possibly MCGA 256 color mode!! Only a dream - - rats)) That's all -- This has been a message brought to you by Mitch Spinner Does anybody out in NetLand listen - or am I just whacking off?
