It's come time for my father to upgrade his business computer system which now consists of an IBM PC with a V20 and a 30 meg HD. He's had it for a long time, and it's starting to experience intermittent(sp?) failures. He's been talking about getting a '386 system, but doesn't want to spend a million dollars for a system. He really likes the CGA color monitor he has, and he wants a color monitor for the new system. I know that there are newer standards, but which one is the current 'standard'? He's been talking about a Compaq 386, and I also suggested CompuAdd and Dell Computers. I don't really keep an eye on the market, but what we're really looking for is a 386 system that has room to be upgraded, and won't lock us in to a certain setup because of some weird engineering. What kind/speed of hard disk is appropriate? Our 30 meg disk is full, and I'd like to go for a ~60 meg disk. We'll be running DOS, and he mainly uses Symphony, several tax programs, and WordPerfect. How much memory is 'enough'? Can expanded/extended memory be used as LIM memory for Symphony? Also I'd like to have both a 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 floppy disk drives, so we can convert all the old PC-XT disks to smaller media. Also the computer will be hooked up to a Kyocera laser printer if that matters. Any/all recommendations (in mail) would be appreciated! -- Chuck Conway conway@sjuvax.UUCP ...!uunet!cbmvax!bpa!sjuvax!conway -- || Chuck Conway || Get Blown || conway@sjuvax.UUCP || in a || ...!uunet!mimsy!rutgers!bellcore!bpa!sjuvax!conway || Convertible!
