I posted a while ago asking for info about terminal emulators that supported modes with more than 25 lines on EGA or VGA equipped machines. I got a lot of replies ... many more than I expected. The following emulators were recommended: Telix 3.11 Qmodem PibTerm Crosstalk Mk.4 VTEK Kermit 2.31 Zcomm KEA Systems VT220 emulator I got a hold of Telix, Qmodem, PibTerm, VTEK, and Kermit 2.31 - the others weren't easily accessible (not public domain, perhaps). I tried them all and found Telix to be by far the best ... I've been using Procomm Plus 1.1A, which I find to be an excellent product, except for it's lack of EGA support. Telix is Procomm Plus and better, features-wise ... it looks and feels just like it, with even a few more wonderful and useful features thrown in (like stripping the 8th bit in terminal mode, which I can't seem to make Procomm Plus do except by putting in in 7bits-even mode, which I really don't like to do. Second best was kermit, but I'd rather not have to go in and out of terminal mode like kermit makes me do (and Telix lets me switch my number of lines while I'm running - kermit doesn't). Neither Telix nor Kermit seem to support VT100 keypad mode (rather than normal mode - and when I connect to the local VMS machines, that won't do). VTEK I never got to allow > 25 lines ... either I don't understand or the version I got doesn't support it. And I don't need the Tektronix emulation anyway. That leaves Pibterm and Qmodem - both were like poor implementations of Telix, if you ask me ... simple VT100 stuff seemed to be able to confuse them (scrolling regions with some lines in inverse left all my lines in inverse, and other such little bothersome things). So, I recommend Telix, but only if you're going to be using a 2400 baud or less modem! The problem is that ALL of these programs are SLOW SLOW SLOW. I use my machine direct-connect to the local minicomputers, and they all look like I'm connected at 2400 baud. Just plain not acceptable. So I'm sticking with Procomm Plus and 25 lines until I can evaluate Crosstalk Mk.4, Zcomm, and the KEA systems VT220 emulator. If anyone can shed any light on whether or not any of those last 3 are fast enough to do 9600 or 19200 at reasonable speed, and whether or not they support VT100 keypad mode (I imagine the KEA systems thing has no problem with that) I'd very much like to hear about it. My past experience with old versions of Crosstalk is that it's plenty fast and supports keypad mode, but I have yet to see Mk.4. Josh BTW - At the end of my last posting I said that I'd like replies e-mailed because I don't always have time to read this newsgroup. Thanks for honoring that. One person, however, complained that this is a "rather arrogant way to ask for help." I don't think so - the net is a source of a wealth of great information ... I shouldn't have to participate and wade through lots of requests for info that I might not have expertise about if I don't have time, and still be allowed to tap in to the info. If you think it's arrogant, then don't reply. Sorry to offend anyone. (BTW, I have been finding time to read the group anyway.) -- Josh Sirota INTERNET: joss@uhura.cc.rochester.edu BITNET: joss_ss@uordbv.bitnet sirota@cs.rochester.edu UUCP: ...!rochester!sirota
