I need some information on how to go about sharing files on 3 (just three) pc's. We will have one model 50 and two model 80's with a 20MB drive on the 50 and 300+ MB drive on each of the 80's. What we need is a way to share data between the two 80's and it would be real nice if we could also share data with the 50'. What would we need to run a little network just in our office? It would be nice if file sharing could be as transparent as possible and it would have to be fast enough to make it comparable to copying say from a floppy to a hard drive if this is possible? We'll be running PC SAS if that will have any affect on the choice of network and file sharing software? I'd like to have some info of what I might need before I contact the vendors:-) Thanks, -- Thomas Kunselman tek@ms.uky.edu {rutgers, uunet}!ukma!tek tek@ukma.bitnet

The best (and easiest) thing is to install a TOPS network. TOPS will make things very transparent; subdirectories that are "mounted" on one machine will apear as just another drive to the other machines. The only problem that I can see is that I don't know if the TOPS AppleTalk cards will work on the PS/2's. In any case there are other third party vendors that do make PS/2 cards, that will work with the TOPS FOR DOS software. >We'll be running PC SAS if that will have any affect on the choice of >network and file sharing software? The problem that you may run into is not enough memory. TOPS takes up quite a bit of RAM from the 640K, and SAS (if I remember, right) requires a 640K machine to run. There are memory cards called HYCARDS or something that I have heard people use with TOPS, to squeeze more conventional RAM from your system when using TOPS. Maybe someone else out there has more info on these HYCARDS. -- Atul Kacker | Internet: akk2@uhura.cc.rochester.edu | UUCP: {ames,cmcl2,decvax,rutgers}!rochester!ur-cc!akk2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
