[comp.sys.ibm.pc] WordPerfect 5.0 & Herc RAMFont????

tj@gpu.utcs.toronto.edu (Terry Jones) (12/11/88)

I would like to hear how well WordPerfect 5.0 and the Herc RAMFont card get
along. I am led to believe that things can look pretty good on screen
with the herc plus card with ramfont capabilities. Anyone actually
using it AND doing things with foreign languages etc? How close to WYSIWYG
is this getting!!!
Does it make things SLOWWWWWW???

They work together fine (I only use it for Engliskii stuff). But "WYSIWYG"
is somewhat of an over-eggzagerat'un. You get a few different text sizes,
etc, italics, to reflect what you are trying to do, that's it. The "reveal"
screen shows a good picture - but you can't work in it.

I am using WP 5.0 with ramfont. I am not using it for foreign language
support, however. It is not true WYSIWYG, because the character positions
are more or less in line with the character cells that are hardwired on a
standard PC screen. Just the size and position within each character cell
changes.

I find it valuable to be able to see boldface and italics on-screen, so
that I can edit appropriately. On a mono monitor, you only get to see
bold. I've been working on documents with lots of different effects,
so need to see what I've got.

I have noticed one problem I haven't been able to pin down. That is that
when you're in ramfont mode, and preview the document, when you exit to
text entry mode, you mung the fonts on the card. The screen displays odd
blotches that are totally unreadable. You can still save your document
working by touch, but you then have to turn the computer off then on again
to clear this condition. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work. This appears to be
a problem with WordPerfect's use of the card's graphics modes, but I am
not sure. Hercules was kind enough to replace the board though testing
showed that the board was fine and was the most current rev level.

If you use the card in non-ramfont mode, you can use the preview feature.
For a workaround, I toggle out of ramfont mode, do my preview, then start
ramfont again in a big macro.

Hope this helps.
