[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 1.44M external 3-1/2" disk drives

akk2@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Atul Kacker) (12/29/88)

I had posted this query a while back and didn't get any responses,
probably because everyone was away for the holidays...

I am looking for an external 3-1/2" drive for XT's and AT's (1.44Meg)
that does not have the hardware check for the extra hole (notch) on
the floppy disk. The 3-1/2" disk drives on the PS/2's do not perform
this check, but IBM no longer manufactures 3-1/2" 1.44M external
drives (This is what the local IBM dealer told me).

Since we are a support organization it is esssential that we be able
to read our PS/2 user's disks on our XT's and AT's.

Any information will be gladly accepted.

Thanks

yeah, that hole-checking sure is obnoxious. there's a guy advertising
in computer shopper a hole-making gadget, that allows you to use the
low density disks as 1.44s, thus saving lots of money. one of these
days i'm going to hack my drive to disable that darn thing...
