[comp.sys.ibm.pc] HP DESKJET / WORDPERFECT5.0 ADVICE NEEDED

pwong@ihuxv.ATT.COM (Wong) (01/11/89)

I just purchased a Deskjet printer. I need the following fonts
that are not a part of the standard Courier:

* 12 pitch (12 cpi) Elite

* Italics

The HP Elite Prestige Cartridge provides the above and costs about $71.

I am considering using soft fonts instead. I believe that I must buy
the disks. Do the disks that came with Deskjet have soft fonts? Are there any
public domain soft fonts available? Do I need 256K or will just one
128K RAM cartridge do (about $85)?

Wordperfect does not give me the SOFT FONTS menu when I go into
Printer->Edit->Cartridge and Soft Fonts. Does this mean that I need
a different copy of 5.0? (My version doesn't support Soft Fonts on the
Deskjet.)

Thanks in advance for any comments and recommendations.

Great choice.

The soft fonts (by HP) for the DeskJet contain only Helvetica and
Times-Roman in 8, 10, 12, 14, (4, 5, 6, 7) points in normal,
bold, italic, bold italic, with ASCII charset or HP-Roman8
charset. No Prestige Elite, but you can get your hands on a
LaserJet public-domain soft font and use a LJ-to-DJ soft font
converter (I have written one). If you are using only soft-fonts
with WP, I strongly suggest two RAM Cartridges.

In order to select the soft fonts in WP, you must have the .ALL
file containing the DeskJet driver (WPRINT1.ALL or WPRINT2.ALL, I
don't remember) in your WP directory. Then you can change your
soft-font configuration. The problem is that WP only knows about
HP cartridges and soft fonts.

Conclusion: Until I finish that program to automatically modify
the WP DeskJet driver to support arbitrary softfonts, your are
stuck with the Elite Cartridge.
