[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 3.5" disk problems

warren@psu-cs.UUCP (Warren Harrison) (01/15/89)

I have a no-name 286 clone and an Amstrad PPC640 laptop that I need to be
able to transfer information between (too far apart for data transfer
utliities). The 286 has a 1.2M disk (A:) and a 720K (B:) disk ... the PPC
has two 720K disks. Here is the problem. The 286 has DOS 3.2 installed,
and the Amstrad is running DOS 3.21 (borrowed from my late great Z-181).
If I format the 3.5" disks on the PPC and boot my 286 (using a floppy)
with 3.21, I can copy files to the 3.5" disks that the PPC can read. If
I try and format the 3.5" disks using the 286 (with DOS 3.21), the PPC
pukes all over them (Abort, Retry or Ignore ...). If I don't boot the
286 with 3.21 (3.2 is installed on the hard disk), the PPC can't even read
the disks (a DIR gets Abort, Rettry or Ignore ...) I copied files onto,
even if they were originally formatted by the PPC.

The simple solution would be to reformat the hard disk and install 3.21
so I could at least write disks which could be read by the PPC. However,
I still can't format the disks on the 286, and I'd just as soon not have
to backup some 20meg of programs in preparation for the format.

Has anyone else encountered these problems? What's the solution :-)!!!

Many thanks for reading this far. Warren
