[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Special Characters on IBM Screen

furlani@broadway.UUCP (John L. Furlani) (01/14/89)

I'm trying to display assorted greek characters that are not in the
general IBM PC character set. Does anyone have information about either
creating new characters or using some sort of software package that already
does this.

Any information you can provide will be of help.

In Advance,
Thanx,

john.

[poster wants to display Greek language characters]

You can do this with the Duke Language Toolkit (at present EGA-only)
available from: Humanities Computing Facility, Languages Building,
Duke University, Durham, NC, 27706 919 634-3637. They download
characters to the EGA board and also a corresponding set to certain
printers. Also contains a font editor. Don't remember cost, but it
is very modest.

Software available for screen font editing depends on hardware.
Here's what I'm aware of (certainly not everything available).

Software for the EGA:
   Duke Toolkit (price of diskette/mailing)
available from Duke University (no longer supported?)
     Jeffrey William Gillette
     THe Divinity School
     Duke University
Durham, NC 27706 BITNET: DYBBUK@TUCCVM (possibly outdated)

Hardware/Software:

Hercules-Plus Graphics Adapter: (~$180 mail order)
Comes with FontMan, their font editor to use with the RamFont mode of
the Plus card (NOT usuable on a non-plus card or non-plus compatible).

Everex Evergraphics Deluxe Adapter: (~110 mail order)
Comes with EverFont, their font editor. This is a Hercules-Plus clone
card. Cheaper than Hercules.

These cards/software allow you to create special screen characters. It
does NOT mean you can use your special font with any software package.
Some word processors override your loaded screen font, others have special
support for these cards that work ok, others say they support Herc Plus
RamFont, but what they mean is they load their own ramfont and prevent
you access to your font within their program (MS Word, for one does this).

I have personal experience with the Herc-Plus card and the Everex Evergraphics
card. I've tested them with a variety of software. If you have additional
specific questions, feel free to contact me.
