[comp.sys.ibm.pc] floppy/hard controller for IBM PC

rpg@mbunix.mitre.org (Robert P. Goldsmith) (01/19/89)

I neeed a floppy/hard disk controller that will control the drives for
high density floppies (1.44mb, 1.2mb), as well as a pair of hard disks
(a pair of ST-225's). This is for a (tru blue) IBM PC. Does Western
Digital make such a beast for the PC ? Does anyone?

I don't know the answer to this, but how about calling WD directly.
In working in the industry, I have found that the majority of manufacturers
are suprisingly willing to give end users information. WD even sells
directly by mail-order to the end user (I know, I got a combo HD/FD
controller from them). If the manuf. does not sell directly to end
users, they will refer you to the nearest distributor. If the dist.
does not sell directly, they will refer you to the nearest retailer.
All in all, when I have called a mfg. (and I have done it plenty of
times) 95% of the time, I go away with the information I wanted to
get. I have even gotten technical repair manuals for disk drives
which I did not even own, but was in the process of evaluating. Mfg's
are more available than most people imagine.

[poster looking for IBM PC/XT hard/floppy controllers that support
hi-density floppies]

This would appear to be of general interest. If you locate, please
post details. Especially if you find one that supports an XT HD
plus more than 2 floppies.
