[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Please Make Your Subject Line Descriptive

davis@clocs.cs.unc.edu (Mark Davis) (01/29/89)

The subject line says it all.

From my previous postings you may have realized that I think that
splitting up comp.sys.ibm.pc is too hard. If we split the group, I
will have to read them all, not saving me any time, but causing me to
get angry at people that post to all of them.

I suspect that most bad subject lines are chosen by people that won't
read this message. They add the group, read a couple of messages to
figure out that somebody that knows the answer will answer and then
they post.

This posting is really directed at the regular readers that followup.
When you post your followup, QA the original and change the subject if
appropriate. For example:

Re: Help -> Disable Xenix dialout (was Re: Help)

	or

Re: For Sale -> Poor Neticut (was Re: For Sale)

The first example would allow me determine if I am interested without
having to read every response. The second example would give me the
opportunity to read your posting after I put "For Sale" in my kill
file.

I think that more careful choice of Subject lines will say everybody
much more time than splitting up the group.

Thanks for your time - Mark (davis@cs.unc.edu or uunet!mcnc!davis)
