[comp.sys.ibm.pc] ATI EGAWONDER

km@emory.UUCP (Ken Mandelberg) (01/04/87)

Has anyone gotten a hold of the new ATI EGA wonder video
board. The advertising in the computer mags sounds great,
but I cannot even find a dealer that sells it.

If anyone has any experience with one, or even knows where
to buy one, please reply by mail.

Hi,

As I have it from my vendor ( a small outfit in Vancouver, WA., and from ATI
themselves), the EGA card was due to be shipped in the first week in November,
no it was the last week in November, NO NO, it was the first week in December.
NO NO NO NO, it has always been it will ship in the LAST week in December.

I have been out of town, and away since the last time I called ATI in December,
on or around the second week. Make your own conclusions... I have heard this
'IN FIFTEEN MORE DAYS' story before.

IF the product ever reaches any shelves, I will buy one to evaluate and will
post a short review (the shop has one on order for me, and one for themselves).

It seems to be the best solution for my Compaq Deskpro's monochrome monitor,
which will give 16 shades of grey at 720 by 352 resolution. I hope they start
making them soon.

One note of caution though... IBM has announced a new standard for their new
6 MHz 8086 based PC's. 640 x 480 x 1 mono, and 640 x 200 x 256 colors. This
will be INCLUDED on the new system boards along with the floppy controller.

Expect a few new video boards to pop up (may be the reason for the delays from
ATI) in the near future with ALL the EGA and new modes.

Toodles....

Does anyone have low-level programming information of ATI's
EGA wonder? In particular I would like to be able to enable the
"enhanced" features without setting the DIP switch or running the
SMS program. (The latter insists on loading a screen-saver TSR which
hooks various vectors that I would prefer not to have hooked...)
Also, what are the differences between revisions 1-4, EGA 800, etc?

I would be interested in this information also. I have written some low level
graphics drivers for CGA and HGC and am currently working on EGA/VGA. I would
also like to do some fast 800x560 graphics but don't have any programming info
on the ATI card. The manual that comes with it only documents the BIOS calls
supported by the on-board ROM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, Does anyone know why I can't get 800x600 on a NEC Multisync II ? It
does 800x560 fine but won't go to 800x600. I didn't calculate the horizontal
scan rate for 800x600 but I would think the monitor should be able to handle
the slightly higher frequency over 800x560.

Write or phone to ATI and they'll send you a diskette with sample C source.
If they won't email me.

What is the difference between the ATI EGAWONDER and the EGAWONDER 800?

I can get the first for $169 and the second for $199.

Also, does the VGAWONDER still have the "any software any monitor" (up
to EGA software, anyway) promise?

Has anyone tried this card in a Tandon (not Tandy) computer?
