There must be a simple answer to this problem. Certainly someone else has experienced it ... I am trying to install a Seagate ST251-1 in a Compaq DeskPro 286. The machine was purchased about 4 years ago and has the original disk controller [ first hint ]. The drive formats successfully and the formatter software which was included with the drive is able to scan the entire drive with no difficulty. I have run setup and set the drive type to 11, which is what the Seagate documentation suggests it be set to. The problem occurs when trying to reboot and perform the high-level format. The system responds with a 1790 disk error and will not recognize the drive after that. No combination of FDISK or FORMAT or whatever can access the drive. Only the drive formatting software has success. N.B. I have told the software to partition the drive into a 32MB partition and a 9?10?12? MB partition. I have also had it install the system files as well. This doesn't seem to make a difference. Okay - I suspect this drive will not work with the controller which is in there and that I need to purchase a new HD controller. Is this correct? Or do I need to buy a ``Compaq'' hard disk? Send mail, DO NOT FOLLOWUP! I will post a summary to the net once I have found a GENUINELY working solution. A plausible path is {backbone}!killer!rpp386!jfh, or just whip up an L.sys line from the number in the .sig and use 'uucp' to login. -- John F.
