[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Capturing printer output to file

skeeve@mhuxu.UUCP (Chris Riley) (02/02/89)

I would like to be able to capture stuff that is to be printed and put it
in a file instead. Is there any easy way to redirect PRN: to a file that
the DOS manual doesn't mention, or is there a TSR around that will
intercept the stuff and do it for you? The only solution I have come up
with is to connect two computers with a null-modem and redirect PRN: to
COM1: and use a communications program to capture the input, but this is
obviously not the way it should be done. Thanks for any help you can
provide.

I have just sent the PC Magazine utility 'prn2file' to
ibmbin@bsu-cs.UUCP. So, whenever Rahul gets through the backlog, it
will appear in c.b.i.p... It comes with source and is easily modified
to do other nifty things like log data arriving over the serial port
to a file, or log keyboard input to a file...

There is a pd utility called "prn2file". Check around for it. Works great.

a commercial program called PRINTQ traps all calls to the printer and
places them in a print queue where they can be viewed ,printed
,deleted, held for printing,or sent to an ASCII file.
all printing is done in the background , so that large print jobs don't
tie up your cpu.
once you use this program you will not be able to function without it !
