[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Memory/CPU Speed Questions

heasley@uhccux.uhcc.hawaii.edu (Jim Heasley) (02/10/89)

For the past several years I have been using an IBM PC/AT (one of the
original 6 MHz models) as a "workstation" for reducing scientific data,
as an image display, and data archive using a WORM. The first memory
board I installed in my AT was an AST Advantage! board which had 2
Mbytes of 150 ns memory. I have since replaced that board with an AST
Advantage Premium board with 1.5 Mbytes of 120 ns memory so I could have
enhanced expanded memory.

In the future I would like to replace the original AT motherboard with
an 80386 one running at 16 MHz. Obviously I want to move to the 386 for
its faster speed, but also because it will automatically support memory
in such a way I can go to mutlitasking cleanly with either Desqview or
Concurrent DOS. My question is whether either or both of the AST memory
boards can be used with such a motherborad? I can see why one wants
faster memory chips on the motherboard itself, but does this also apply
to memory on expansion boards? It is my impression, perhaps incorrect,
that the bus on AT machines (including many of the 386 ones) run at 8
MHz, and in that case both of these boards *should* work ok with the
faster processor. In fact, I now use the Advantage! board in my AT
clone which has a 10 MHz clock and it seems to work just fine. Can
someone tell me if this will also be the case with the faster 386
machine?

Please reply to me via electronic mail as I only read this news group
infrequently. If there is enough interest I will post a summary of
replies to the newtork.
