[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Heard of BlackBeard EDITOR?

gsg0384@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (02/07/89)

Hi,
Have you heard of a public domain editor program called
'BlackBeard Programmer's Editor'?

Seems like it supports a mouse, 10-file windowing, centering, stay-resident
(TSR), etc. But no words on bigger-than-64kbyte-file handling.
Does the program handle this?

If it does, it is just what I've wanted for long. Can some one post it on
comp.binaries.ibm.pc?

Blackbeards is a heck of an editor, if you have the horses. This summer,
when I was questing for a shareware editor (still am, sigh), I came across
Blackbeards on a local BBS. It is very Brief-like. It has oodles of power,
it handles big files, windows, I *think* regular-expressions. The only
reason I didn't like it was its large size(>200k?) and slow screen handling.
I want something closer to QEdit in size, but more configurable. For me,
that meant writing my own. I have an original 8088, so on an AT-class machine,
Blackbeards would probably be zippy, same as with a faster hard disk.

Yes, the docs claim that it does virtual file editting. (ie files as
large as your disk) My only complaint with it is that the windows seem
to be of non-modifiable size and when you switch from one window to
another the file in the window you are exiting is written out to disk
and the file in the window you are entering is read in from disk. This
can make window switching slow. The good part of it is the TSR'ing of
it seems to work fine. The only problem I've seen is that it doesn't TSR
fine under the MKS Toolkit shell.

It's decent, but I still prefer MicroEmacs over it.

I'm not in a position to post it. Also, please do not e-mail to me
asking me to mail it to you. You can get it from the following BBS:

It's an RBBS system and you'll need XMODEM to download and PKXARC or
ARC to unpack it. I don't recall its exact name on the system, but it is
something like BB.ARC

Good luck, it's worth a try.

All this talk about Editors that use rodents, and I have not yet heard
my favourite, Multi-Edit. Has any one else ever used this editor?

It supports just about everything with the mouse, vi pop up menus.

Cut and paste is especially suited for the mouse, and it is real easy to
use. The editor supports virtual files, is fully configurable, has
regular expressions for pattern matching, a powerful macro language, multiple
windows (moveable and sizeable), and supports different configurations based
on the filename extensions.

This is not shareware, but a fully featured (ie not crippleware) product has
been released for general distribution. The only thing it does not have is
the users manual, which will help if you're a macro programmer. To get the
manual, ya gotta buy it! It does have online help, though.

My only beef is that it gets real slow when there is less than about
9k of memory left to work with. It gets into some heavy swapping then.
