[comp.sys.ibm.pc] need disk cache for DOS 4

egisin@mks.UUCP (Eric Gisin) (02/02/89)

I read the review of disk caches in PC magazine,
but it did not mention if they tested them under DOS 4.0.

I'm looking for a cache that will:
1. run under PC DOS 4 (and work with large partitions),
2. use extended memory,
3. co-exist with vdisk in extended memory.
Since the way vdisk allocates extended memory changed
between DOS 3.3 and DOS 4, I suspect some caches
will no longer run under DOS 4.
Can anyone recommend a cache that they have used
with the above configuration?

I have a few caches already, but none are satifactory.

PC magazine's dcache will not run in extended memory.
If you are looking for it, you can FTP it from simtel20.arpa
(under pd1:<msdos.dskutl>).

The MS SmartDrive I have will not run under DOS 4.

DisCache, which I am using, has a few problems.
I can't use it with vdisk, it doesn't save writes
in the cache, and I think it is crashing my machine.

Eric,

A good disk cache is PC-CACHE that comes with PC-TOOLS. Make
sure to get PC Tools Deluxe 5.0 or above (5.1 is the latest). With
PC-CACHE you can install it in Extended memory and it will like VDISK.
I use it with VDISK and in Extended memory. It will run under DOS 4
because the whole PC Tools package will. Here is the syntax I use:

PC-CACHE /SIZEXT=64K <--- SIZEXT is EXTENDED MEMORY SIZE IN

Kilobytes. The whole PC Tools Deluxe program is really wonderful so it
is worth it. It can be found mail order for $36-$40. For that price,
you get a Disk Cache, a DOS Shell (better than DOS 4.0), a Disk
Defragger, a Desktop program that competes with SideKick Plus, and
more. Try it.

                                                /* Eric Thav */
