[comp.sys.ibm.pc] scan man

gws@n8emr.UUCP (Gary Sanders ) (02/06/89)

Has anyone had a chance to play with the Logitec scanman
handheld image scanner? I have seen it at a couple of stores but
no one has taken it out of the box. From the labels on the box
the device will scan in image into a file in several different formats.
It looks like it will support a number of desktop publishers, and
paint program formats.

What I would like to be able to do is scan in typed pages or
text from a book and then convert the scanned image into ascii text.
Are there any utilitys that come with scanman or work with scanman that
will do the bitmap image to text trasnlation?

		thanks

Concerning the Logitech ScanMan, I saw it demonstrated in a store. I eventually
bought the DFI-3000. Interesting note: Thunderscan has come out with a hand
scanner. The Thunderscan, the Logitech, and the DFI hand scanners all look
exactly alike! Same buttons, same adjustment knobs, same size, same shape.
They all can go to 400 dpi. The differences: 1. software. The DFI comes
with Dr. Halo graphics editor, which I have mixed feelings about. (I wonder
if the Logitech software will work with the DFI?) 2. The DFI uses yellow/green
LEDs for lighting, while the Logitech uses red LEDs. The man in the store says
that the DFI can scan color pictures better because of this. Who knows?
The DFI came with an adv. for Optical Character Recognition software for
$99. It says that if you scan two halves of a sheet it will automatically
figure out how the two halves go together. It can also learn new fonts.
They don't give any percentage success rate, so I haven't shelled out
the $99.
    Hope this helps.
