[net.general] Recommendation for Reducing the Number of Tedious Debates on Network

hom@houxm.UUCP (H.MORRIS) (09/18/85)

I would like to request that when a newsgroup you find useful suddenly
becomes inundated with some exchange of hotheaded oppinions which makes
it difficult to wade through, that EVERYONE who would like to stop
the debate simply save a copy of the flamer's article and mail it back
to him/her (say, use s- flame; issue `r-' command, then start editing
your reply with `r flame') with a brief comment.
This takes very little thought or time, and is perfect poetic
justice. Flamer will have about as much of his/her time wasted as
the cumulative amount of time wasted by thousands of people all over
the country, or he/she will have to give up reading his/her mail, as
many of us have given up reading net news.
No doubt I will be subjected to my own weapon by the flame-lovers,
and we may also have a flaming debate on the a merits of my idea.
It is just my recommendation that when somebody puts something really
off-the-wall (and long and tedious, with long extracts of somebody
else's article thrown in) into your newsgroup, you send the whole thing
back to them along with an appropriate comment, like "look, I didn't
need to have my time wasted this way".
(Ulp, here they come at me now)
