[comp.sys.ibm.pc] DOS/16M by Rational Systems, Inc.

michael@copper.SDP.TEK.COM (Michael Brouhard) (02/15/89)

I have a large application that was developed in a UNIX environment that I
am trying to port to DOS. The program itself is over 700K, plus it uses
a good deal of dynamic memory while running. You may well imagine that
trying to fit all this into DOS is one of my major problems.

A company called Rational Systems, Inc., located in Natick Mass., sells a
product called DOS/16M. This appears to be a linker and run-time
loader/overlay manager that allows you to program as if you had 16 Mbytes
of memory. If this product performs as advertised, it looks like just
what I need.

They sell this for $5000, and I would like to get some other's opinions
before I plunk down my company's money. If you have had any experience
with this product, good or bad, please mail me your comments. I will
summarize and post the responses to this news group

I was evaluating such products (DOS extenders) quite a while back for one
of our products on the PC (286 and 386 boxes). I found the Ratinal DOS/16M is
rather steep in price for our purpose. At the end I chose the OS/286 from
A.I. Architect. They have a better pricing structure (at least for evaluation)
and the big plus is that there is a OS/386 for 386 boxes if we choose to take
advantage of features in 386 machines.

I am very satisfied with the product. Their support is fairly good (at least
much better than that from Microsoft) but I would like to have a more senior
tech person on the other end. However, the tech support did try to get more
help from others within the company and called me back.

One thing that (mildly) p*ssed me is that there was a free upgrade and the
upgrade noticed was lost in the mail. When I learnt about it from the tech
support, it was after their deadline and they wanted to charge me for the
upgrade. Another thing is that they listed Sperry machines are compatible
but it does not run properly (keyboard I/O kept hanging the system even with
the latest BIOS) without the TOUCHDOWN device from A.I.Architect.

Disclaimer: I am just a satisfied customer and am not related to A.I.Architect
in any way.
