[comp.sys.ibm.pc] A couple of AT&T PC6300 questions

rry@homxb.ATT.COM (R.YADAVALLI) (02/17/89)

Hello,

I have a couple of questions about the AT&T PC6300. First, has any one used
the RS232 serial mice (e.g., Genius GM+ etc. advertised in Computer Shopper)
on a 6300? How well do they work in general and in particular with a 6300?
Any model better than the others? I would appreciate all the information I
can get (both good and bad).

Secondly, I am looking for the least expensive way of upgrading an AT&T PC6300
CPU3 with 256K of memory on the mother board to 640K of memory. I noticed that
the later versions of the mother board had higher density (256Kb) memory chips.
Except for this the boards were identical. Is it correct to assume that by
replacing the existing 64K chips with 256K ones I could expand the memory to
640KB, possibly 1MB? Any problems to look out for?

I welcome all suggestions, ideas, recommendations, warnings etc.
Please use e-mail if you feel there is not enough interest.
Thanks in advance to all of you for your replies.

If you have a dual floppy 6300 you are in luck, because one of the
banks of memory is socketed. Otherwise you need to desolder 18
chips. in either one of the memory banks. (but only one). Maximum
memory you can have on the 6300 motherboard is 640k (one bank of
64k chips, and one bank of 256k chips)

	good luck
