[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC Tools V5 update

galvin-peter@CS.Yale.EDU (Peter Galvin) (02/24/89)

I found this on Compu$erve. There is an arc file there containing updates
to a few of the pctools programs, but since I it was 200K, I haven't
yet received my update to PCTools, and they are automatically sending updates
to registered users I didn't grab the file. By the way, what happened to
the promised review of PC Tools? I've heard about bugs, but is the
program itself as good as it looked to be?!

Dear PC Tools Deluxe Version 5 user:

Thank you for your input and support. We really DO listen, and
appreciate all the feedback you have given us on version 5. These files
have some improvements and fixes:

PCBACKUP:

    New Features:

    The new files PCBACKUP.EXE, PCB1.EXE - PCB5.EXE add a "Quick
Compression" option which can reduce the number of disks needed to
do a DMA backup and can (depending upon the speed of your machine)
actually reduce the number of disks needed. This is now the default
option as it is almost always better than using no compression.
When it is compressing, it will let you know on the bottom line of
    the screen.

    Corrections:

    1. Fixed a bug that could give an incorrect "not part of current
set" error when doing a DOS-based restore.

    2. Fixed a problem that could cause "error writing directory" on
some machines. This could also cause the directory to be written
very slowly on some other machines.

    3. Improved the speed of DMA backups. (Note: some of you have
mentioned that 5.1 PCBACKUP is much slower than 4.3. It WAS a
little slower (about 10 percent), and that has been fixed. If you
are seeing a large difference in speed, it is due to the fact that
5.1 uses a different track format than 4.3. This means that the
FIRST backup you make over your 4.3-made backups will be slow, but
after that it will be fast as the disks will be formatted into the
new format.) It will also now let you know when it is formatting
disks on the bottom line of the screen.

    4. Fixed a problem that could sometimes leave a dialog box on the
screen when it should have been put away.

    5. The backup will now start right away if the first disk is
    already in the drive.

    6. HP and Mouse Systems mice are now supported.

DESKTOP:

We moved the Database into a separate file called DBMS.OVL. Also
fixed a problem that could cause the system to lock up on come CGA
    displays.

Numerous other small fixes have been made. In addition to providing
these files for download, we will be sending an update disk in about two
weeks to registered owners. This will include ALL fixes, including
minor ones. So if you purchased PC Tools Deluxe through a dealer,
please get your registration card into us so we can find you!

Please remember that these files are being provided so that registered
owners can get any improvements and bug fixes quickly. These files are
not shareware, nor are all the files that are needed to use the program
provided - just the enhanced or changed files.

Thanks again. We realize that for those of you who are updating from
version 4, there is a whole new interface to learn. We encourage you to
really give it a try. In the long run, we think you will like it much
better.

Also, we apologize for the difficulty you may have in getting through on
our tech support phone lines. You can dial both (503) 690-8080 and
8090. We have 25 lines, but we have also just shipped 3 months of
product in one month, so there are quite a few more calls. We're doing
everything we can to remedy the situation and we appreciate your
patience and understanding.

We are very committed to PC Tools Deluxe version 5 and to making it as
compatible as possible. We really do appreciate your input!

Very truly yours,

Central Point Software
