A colleague of mine has asked me to try to track down the following:
If an individual has a modem, phone and fax machine with only one
telephone line, is there an intelligent box which can be connected
to the telephone line, feeding all three devices, which can automatically
determine what type of incoming call is being received and switch the call
accordingly?
Viz:
-------------- FAX

----switch------+------------- MODEM
|
|
-------------- PHONE
Example:
Incoming call - switch senses, picks up connection, determines voice is
incoming, extends ringing tone to caller, ringing current to phone.
I know, it seems unlikely but my colleague says he read of such a thing in the
press not too long ago! We know of the products that the caller can control
using DTMF tones, but what we are looking for is a TOTALLY AUTOMATIC device
requiring no caller input and switching everything itself.
