[comp.sys.ibm.pc] cache software questions

mdlawler@bsu-cs.UUCP (Mike Lawler) (02/18/89)

I have a couple of questions about disk cache software and the program from
PC Magazine. I have a 10 M 0 wait state AT clone with a Segate ST125 38 ms
harddrive. When I run dcache with a 64 K cache in dos memmory it only seems
to make a difference on Norton's SD "speed disk" and DT "disk test programs"
I increased my time with DT from 2:06 min to 1:37 min with about half of my
harddrive free. Is this normal? How much better are the commercial cache
programs than this program? Have any of you had any problems with this program?
Also I can't figure out exactly what the /h switch does. I think it toggles
from drive C: to drive D:. From range of bytes can you specify dcache's
cache size in dos and expanded memory? Can anyone send me the article or the
assembler code if it is only a couple of K? Finally, Should dcache make a
difference when you save a file in Word Perfect? I saved a 122 K file in
word perfect and it took 20 sec with Dcache and 22 sec without it. Thanks
for all of your responces in advance.

I use SmartDrive for one simple reason:

When Windows needs some extra Expanded Memory, it can ask SmartDrive to
release some. I whish I knew how they do that...

It may not be the fastest, but it sure is convenient when you only have 2Mb of
memory in the system...
