I am seeking information in hopes of upgrading my Heath 151 PC-clone (4.77 MHz) to one of the faster processor driven machine's (286 or 386). My current configuration consists of: 2 - 360K Floppies (would like to change one to a 1.2 meg) 1 - 30 Meg Seagate hard drive with Western D. Controller 1 - Jameco extended memory card Nec V20 chip The remaining boards are the standard ones included with the Heath kit; CPU, Video, I/O, Memory, Floppy controller, and the Backplane (mother-board) What I would like to do is savage as much of the original system as possible. I spoke to my local Heath dealer and was told that this is impossible, that my only option is to scrap or sell my old system, and buy a new kit. I know this conversion is possible because a company, "First Capital Computer" (I think that's right) offer's it for a number of different Heath/Zenith configrations. I have also tried to follow the posting's concerning the "INTEL-386 board", but it seems that if you are not a TRUE IBM, then the board may not work. Input on the use of the INTEL board and a Heath machine would also be appreciated. Years ago when I decided to go the "kit route" I thought I'd learn a little about the machine's internals (I did), and that if Heath did upgrade to faster machine's, they would make available to the kit builders a reasonable number of inhancement from previous levels of machines; maybe that was an un-realistic view point to take, I guess I got MAD from the "forget it, it can't be done, buy a new kit" response I got from my local dealer - Oh well. Anyway, I still like my machine alot but would like to move forward toward the faster speeds and capabilities. I'd appreciate any information on the above, you can either email to me or post response's to the net if other's would be interested. Thanks... Rick Farrell Internet:rickf@cadnetix.COM Cadnetix Corp. Get hold of either REMARK (The Heath Users Group Mag) or Sextant magazine. They both have lots of ads from folks that can upgrade your 151. There are some low cost speed increase upgrades, as well as 286 upgrades (not so low cost). You can also easily increase the memory to over a Meg. Call a place called FCC (First Computer Corp?) in St. Charles, MO. They specialize in these machines and probably could sell you something (they aren't the cheapest). You'll have to look up their number.
