[net.general] Need help with Alcohol Policies

wrightm@pur-ee.UUCP (Scott R. Marshall - Guest User) (10/29/85)

The Dean of Students at Purdue University has assembled a Task Force
to study current problems with alcohol abuse and to find solutions to
these problems. As a member of this task force I have been asked to
do some research on the policies and programs in place at other
universities. We are interested in those policies which encourage
good relations with off-campus neighbors, responsible drinking
programs, etc.

The drinking problem at Purdue has increased dramatically in the
past couple of years and we are determined to do something about it.
The task force is comprised of students, faculty, staff, and also
several community residents. We are trying to find non-regulatory
solutions to the problems of large off-campus parties, and drunk
drivers. We do have a designated driver program in place. (For
those not familiar a designated driver is a member of a group going
to a bar who agrees not to drink for the entire evening. As long as
the designated driver does not drink the bar will supply him with
free soft drinks.) While the largest bar in the community has
stopped participating because they say that students were abusing
the system, the Designated Driver program has generally been
considered a success. That is the type of thing we are looking for.

Please mail your responses to ihnp4!pur-ee!rhoades (not wrightm,
please) and I will summarize to the net.

Any suggestions and or comments will be greatly appreciated, thanks
in advance,

Scott
