It's me again with a different problem. I just got my new hard disk and
it seems to work great. The problem is that I can't boot it if I have a
config.sys file on the hard disk. It has to boot from floppies.

I installed MS-DOS 4.01 using the install disk. The floppy disk that I
boot from has a config.sys file and it boots fine. My hard disk will
boot fine without a config.sys file.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem? Is it a harware or software
problem?

Thanks for any help you can give.

You can boot off the floppy but not off the hard disk. You think the
problem is in your config.sys. Is there a command in the config.sys on
the hard disk that is causing the boot to die?

No. I have the same config.sys on my floppy as I do on the hard disk
(with the exception of the paths involved in the file). I tried to boot
with a config.sys that only had one command at a time and it still
didn't work. I have a feeling that my MS-DOS install disk isn't working
properly and that DOS on my hard disk is missing something. I did have
some problems installing DOS (however, everything seems to be working
fine except for the boot problem).

Gateway 2000 has been great. They called me back when they said they
were going to and they will copy my install disk over again. Even when
it was probably my fault (there was no write protect cover over the hole
and I might have damaged some files.)

If the problem isn't the installation please let me know.

Thanks,

Greg Cook

Do you remember which error message the machine gave you on failure? Did it
say that it was a config.sys problem, or are you guessing? It may have some-
thing to do with a new command syntax in the new version of DOS you're trying
to install. Or maybe not.

Greg, It sounds to me like you need to run the "fdisk" command to
configure drive C: as the active and primary drive. Then run the
"format c: /s" command on the drive to make it bootable.

Make sure you back up what is on the hard drive first because all will be lost
when you run the fdisk and/or format commands.

Thanks to all who helped me with this problem. I do have it fixed so,
please, no more mail is necessary on the subject.

For those of you who do not know what I am talking about:

	I received a new hard disk onto which I installed MS-DOS 4.01.
The problem was that the hard disk would not boot if there was any kind
of a config.sys file on the disk. It would boot fine without this file.

Diagnosis: The MS-DOS Install disk was bad.

Solution: The disk was replaced by the company I purchased my computer
from (Gateway 2000) and MS-DOS was reinstalled. It works great now.
