Hello, Looking into a two computer "LAN" for my office has gotten me thinking about the possibilities for cheap short distance communications, and while I'm planning on buying a 115k baud serial lan (Desk-Link TM), I have become interested in the potential of much faster parallel communication. Unfortunately, I have been having trouble finding serious disscussions of the parallel port in print; most books give about one page to the "printer port" and tell you to use DOS or if you are feeling unfettered the BIOS because PC printers are slow. This is not entirely satisfactory. Some trial ins and outs have assured me that the printer data port 03BC for lpt1 is indeed read/write and that the printer control port 03BE can be written to and read from, although the results are not quite what I might have expected. I suppose that at this point I could work something out, given some time and a break-out-box, but I would rather do it the "right way" and get some documentation on the hardware before I start hacking. Hints, directions or other forms of help would be greatly appreciated. If I get generally useful mail, or if asked, I will summarise. Thanks in advance.
