If you want to ensure 8514 compatability why don't you bye an 8514 monitor?  It
will work when plugged into the VGA port.  I agree the monitors are expensive,
but if you want all the capabilities and you are looking to buy any time soon
you're going to have to cough up the bucks.  

PC-MAGAZINE (FEB 24,89 issue I believe) has 11 product reviews for 8514 type
monitors.  You might look in there for additional information.

You mean a genuine IBM 8514? Have you looked at one? I have,
and a black on white text display makes me puke. I can't tell if it 
is the monitor or the card that is the problem.
