I've just assembled a 386 system for myself using a 20 MHz Mylex motherboard, WD1007A-WA2 ESDI disk controller with 1:1 interleave and 16K track buffer, and a Fujitsu 2444E 72 Meg ESDI disk. The system works fine, and I've wanted to quantify the performance of the system with some benchmarks. Norton utilities 4.0 reports the CI to be 24.5, which seems right, but the DI (disk) comes out 2 or something. Spintest seems to be flaky, and reports only the transfer rate, which comes out just over 1 million bytes/sec, which could be right, but I would like a third opinion. Some of the difficulty could be with the fact that the WD1007 apparently does a mapping of the actual 34 sectors/trk into a phantom 17 sectors/trk. (This can be enabled and disabled with a jumper - if anyone knows the ins and outs of disabling this, I'd appreciate a note. I've seen references to CORETEST, PC Labs benchmarks, etc. Are these public domain or shareware that's available on a BBS somewhere? Or could someone post/email some to me. Bob Rindfuss ...att!ttrde!rdr (312) 416-5321 before Mar 31 (317) 845-6640 after Apr 1 BTW - I got a super deal on the ESDI disk - it was a brand new OEM surplus disk (with 1 yr warranty and manual) from Corporate Systems Center, (408) 737-7312. $450. As ESDIs go, it's a small drive (72Mb), but I was mainly interested in the performance. At the time, mine was the last drive they had, but they said they might get more. They were exceptionally good to deal with - when I first called they didn't have any, but said they would call if they got more. Sure enough, about a week later they called and said they had one. I was still checking on compatibility issues between that drive and which controller to use, so they said they would hold it for me until I decided. The next day I ordered it, and it arrived within a week. Good recommendation for CSC.
