As the author of MAXI Form and the commercial version of it MAXI Disk, I would like to assure you that when the program is used within its specs (i.e. supported drive types and DOS versions) it is just as reliable as normal DOS disks. The floppy disks themselves are recorded at the same bit densities. Normal DOS disks waste a lot of track space with filler and padding. MAXI converts this space into extra data sectors. Other disk systems such as KayPro CP/M (remember that?) pack 10 sectors on a track using the same disks and drives as PC's. They have been used reliably for years. The MAXI Disk commercial version, which goes for $19.95 US, features a menu interface and the ability to format normal DOS disks, as well as system disks. See brief announcement in Mar 27/89 ComputerWorld, page 49, lower left corner. Hope this helps you a bit, miklos g. Herne Data Systems Ltd.
