[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Good Word for Hard Drives International

forrest@sybase.com (03/25/89)

Several people have said good things about Hard Drives Internation.
A good friend of mine, who lives in Tempe where HDI is located,
recently bought a disk from them. Since he was local he went to
the store. He was very impressed with their professionalism
and knowledge, especially compared to some of the other mail order
places he had contacted.

So, if you're thinking about buying a hard disk, you should
check them out.

(Needless to say, I have no connection with HDI at all).

I recently purchased a ST-138 from HDI. There service was excellent and
the drive has performed flawlessly. Highly recommmended.

I second the above. I ordered a el-cheapo 20m miniscribe from them, and
the RLL controller turned out to be incompatible with my ancient Kaypro 16-2.
(personal machine, not office) They gave me no hassle whatsoever about
returning the by now shopworn kit for full credit on a MFM Seagate. (no, NOT
a st-225, a st-125 3.5. really like it so far.) Only caveat I would make is
that the long hours described in their Shopper ads are for the order desk
ONLY, all the other numbers seem to go home rather early and at erratic
times. And the credit-card credit slip took 5 weeks, but they said they
were in the middle of a move at the time. Would order again, happily.

Space. I wanna go. NOW!

I bought the 150mb 3180 miniscribe and Adaptec controller from them. They
were fast and so is the drive (works great). Seems like a good outfit.

I "third" it. It seems like so much of we what we see on the net is
warnings or complaints, it is nice to see something like this
occasionally. I recently purchased a Miniscribe 6085 from HDI and
was quite pleased. It came with moderately long package of
documentation explaining how to install different drives and
controllers in different PC's. Probably a little tough for a real
novice due to it's generic nature, but a very handy reference for
the technical types. I thought it was a nice touch.

So how about being a buddy and posting the address and telephone
    number?

    thanks a lot!

I recently ordered a Miniscribe M3675 from HDI. I just got my Mastercard
bill and found that they billed me for the item immediately, even
though it is backordered. I find this rather perturbing, since they
mention membership in the Micro Marketing Council in their ads. As I
recall, billing people for unshipped merchandise is one of the abuses
that the MMC was specifically formed to combat.

This is a kind of a hassle since I have to exclude that amount from
my MC bill and write a note to MC explaining why so they don't charge
me interest.

I'm not sure about MMC but I think that all they are for is to give you
a warm fuzzy feeling. And, if you ask about policies, MMC members (probably)
have to tell you what they are, and then abide by them. But the policies can
be anything they want.

This is my impression because I've been looking at lots of mail-order company
ads lately, lots of which have the MMC label, and a lot of them have, for
example, a policy of no returns. One, in fact, has a policy of NO RETURNS,
even if the hardware you order is dead on arrival. In that case, they'll
"help" you by giving you the manufacturer's address so you can contact them
about your factory warranty. I called them (on their 800 number, so they
paid) to verify this, it sounded so unbelieveable. This mail-order company
displays the MMC logo, and this restriction IS mentioned in the ad (in the
small print).

All I can suggest for you in the future is to read a lot of ads and make up
a list of all possible restrictions, then call your potential vendor and
ask about all of them. Because if you don't ask, they won't tell you.

(Examples: Credit card surcharge, normal shipping and handling cost,
additional shipping cost for particular shipping methods, when is the
credit card billed, is the item in stock, when will it be shipped,
are returns accepted if the product is unopened, if the product is opened
but was DOA, if the product is opened but doesn't work totally, is there
a cost charged for returning an item, is the refund cash or store credit?)

I also had good luck with them. I especially liked their 30 day trial
period so I didn't have to worry about compatability.
