[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Sound boards for PCs

pamela10@ihlpf.ATT.COM (Lanzevin) (04/07/89)

With all the PCs out there and the introduction of these new
sound boards (Ad-Lib, Covex (spelling?) Sound Thing, Roland,
etc.) I figure there must be some of you out there who've
already bought one of these things. The possibility of
better sounding games (OK, I used to own a Commodore, wanna
make something of it!? As a matter of fact I've still got
it, but its FOR SALE if anyone is interested) on a PC is
something I am willing to shell out some bucks for. I'd
appreciate some comments about the boards that cost under
$300, but since others on the Net might be interested in
other boards, all comments on any of the sound boards would
be appreciated. Particular things I would be interested in
   are:

Can the sound be directly output to external speakers?
Do you need an amplifier for your speakers?

Could you output the sound to a "boom box" (i.e. a portable
   radio/tape player)?

Will they work with all software? I know some software supports
particular boards, but will the software work with other boards
   as well?

Anyone had any bad experiences with a particular board/manufacturer?

I've sent off for some info from Ad-Lib that I can post when
I get it. Thanks in advance for the help.
