We have, where I work, a myriad of PC's. Recently, an engineer here hooked them all together via RS-232 cables to a smart switch box, and proclaimed: "Lo verily, now we have a network and can share the laser printer and the ability to exchange files" Well, it does work ok for sharing the laser printer, but people are still using sneaker/floppy net to transfer files around. It's easier, it's quicker. This isn't really a problem, people can do what they want, but confronted now with the problem of backups in a regular basis, we need a better solution. Here's what I want, perhaps you folks can tell me if it exists. What I want is the ability to do backups like Apollo workstations do, where one node on the network copies the file(s) to tape from everyones machine without any operator intervention apart from loading the tape and saying GO. Does this exist for the PC ? Email me if you arnt clear on what I'm talking about. As an aside, does UUPC work "in background" or does it take over the machine when it's runing. It seems to me that a fair portion of this could be done with UUCICO, UUCP and CRON analogues for the PC if they run in background and will let me do what I normally do in foreground. PLease respond to me directly, I dont read this group. Thanks. -- ``How do you like my new cordless phone ?'' ``What ?'' richard@gryphon.COM decwrl!gryphon!richard gryphon!richard@elroy.jpl.NASA.GOV
