[comp.sys.ibm.pc] GCC as a cross-compiler for i286

I've heard that it would be quite a trick to get gcc to run on a 286,
but how feasible is it to configure gcc (running on a 32 bit machine)
to generate code for a 286?

I would be interested in hearing any war stories on the subject.
