Precis from New York Times article on Sunday January 12, page 18 : " Cuomo Seeks to Use Thruway as Route for Cable " The article reports that Governor Cuomo has asked that a 1950's law be waived so that a fiber optic cable can be laid along the Thomas Dewey Thruway for voice, computer and television signals. The Thomas Dewey Thruway originates in NYC, runs north to Albany, and then west across the whole state to Erie PA. Current law prohibits use of Interstate rights of way for utilities, which might endanger motorists or traffic. 80% of New York's population lives within a few miles of such a route, which would be constructed by state phone utilities who would then lease services and access. Perhaps in a few short years we all will be reading our net news via fiber optics buried along the interstate system. -- Mike Clarkson, ...!allegra \ BITNET: mike@YUYETTI or CRESS, York University, ...!decvax \ FS300013@YUSOL 4700 Keele Street, ...!ihnp4 > !utzoo!yetti!mike North York, Ontario, ...!linus / CANADA M3J 1P3. ...!watmath / AT&T^G: (416) 667-3954
