Anyone heard of or had experience with the Mitsubishi 4070X hard drive? I saw an ad for it: 70MB, 23ms, HH. Price $436!! I want to add it as a 2nd drive to my Z-248, Zenith AT "compatible" Arra Avakian, arra@stellar.com

I bought one of these mail order from a place in Michigan advertising in Computer Shopper. They "misplaced" the order and after several phone calls and a letter it eventually arrived. I Installed it in an AT&T 6300 replacing a Microscience 20M and used the same XEBEC controller after burning a new ROM for it. It made a _VERY_ noticable improvement in performance as my old disk was almost full. (It had even been "optimized".) The drive has been in use for a few weeks with no apparent problems. It is very quiet with only a little hissing noise while its on. Seeks are just little clicks. It has a voice coil positioner and auto parking heads. The 70 Meg claim is unformatted, for an RLL controller. It's about 40 formatted with a MFM controller, which I'm using. The only disturbing thing about the drive is that the one that I got had a lot (>20) of bad tracks already marked. I don't know what is typical for a RLL rated drive. I didn't see any more bad tracks during the low level format. BTW, the drive is 5 heads and 970 or so tracks. C. W. Gantt Standard disclaimer, etc.
