[net.general] Anti Junk Mail List

coulter@hplabsc.UUCP (Michael Coulter) (01/22/86)

I recently sent a letter to Byte magazine asking them not to make my
name and address available to third parties. They sent back a wonderful
reply saying that they would comply and telling me about an organization
which can get your name OFF of at least some mailing lists. An excerpt
from the letter is reproduced below.

... write to the Direct Mail Marketing Association, 6 E. 43rd St., New
York, NY 10017, and ask that your name and address be included in their
"do not pander" file. This is a computer listing of people who specifically
do not wish to receive advertising in the mail. It is updated
quarterly, and supplied to most major computer services which prepare
labels for large promotional mailings. There it is matched to any
possible occurrences of your name on rented lists and, to the best of the
computer's ability, deleted from the labels generated. Therefore, when
writing to the DMMA, include as many possible versions (misspellings,
etc.) of your name and address as you can think of, to help the
computer do its matching job.
