[comp.sys.ibm.pc] External Hard Disk for Laptop- info needed

markxx@garnet.berkeley.edu (04/04/89)

I need information about getting or building an external
hard disk for a Toshiba laptop. I currently have a Toshiba 1200 F with
2 floppies, as it has a longer battery life (which is crucial to my
application). I have an XT with a Seagate 251 40 meg that I would like
to salvage or use if possible.

	Two questions:

	1) Does anyone know how, or can point me to a reference that
explains, how to build an external disk enclosure for a PC's hard disk
(including I presume a controller and power supply)?

	2) Are there inexpensive drives like this already available (i.e.
less than $600-800 or so for 40 megs)?

I already know about Toshiba's options (expansion, internal drive,
etc.) but they are either too expensive or don't meet my needs. ANY help
would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The company SANDHURST MARKETING PLC, (Tel:England 0403.50200, Telex: 87611,
Fax:0403.69045) are selling a product called PortaDrive. This is a
40 MB hard disk for the T1100 Plus/T1200 and T3100. At the present time
they are asking 600 Pounds for the unit, but I understand it's in the
prototype stage.

There is another company called PACKAGED SOLUTIONS LTD (Tel:England
0923.36022) which may do a similiar product. I am waiting for a reply to
my enquiries so I cannot offer more information.
