cs3b3aj@maccs.McMaster.CA (Stephen M. Dunn) (04/23/89)
Sorry it took so long ... I've compiled a brief list of the responses
to my request for information on shareware distribution houses. The
following are the names etc. of the ones I know of or was informed of;
don't consider this as gospel. There may be errors in it.
Public Brand Software
P. O. Box 51315
Indianapolis, IN 46251
(800) 426-DISK (U.S.A., except Indiana)
(317) 856-7571 (Indiana, outside U.S.A.)
(317) 856-4144 (Business phone; not for orders)
"the software library for the Indianapolis IBM PC User's Group"
$5/disk ($6/3.5" disk)
Files are archived (PKXARC is uncluded)
They carry PD and shareware; for shareware packages, they say it's
shareware, list the registration fee and summarize the benefits of
registering
Selection runs more to serious stuff (somebody said "No pornographic
video games"), but they have a reasonable selection of standard
sorts of games
Sizzleware
P. O. Box 6429
Lake Charles, LA 70606
(800) 356-2697 (orders, free catalog)
(318) 474-1548 (help and information)
$1.99 per disk + $3 P&H, cash, cheque, Visa, MC
Diskettes are low quality, so save the programs onto better disks
once you receive them.
Prompt service
PC-SIG
(unfortunately, I didn't get any address etc. for this one)
approx. $6/disk
very large collection (around 1200 disks)
Canadian Remote Systems
(once again, no address etc.; they're somewhere in Etobicoke, ON)
one of the largest libraries on the continent
on the pricey side (up to CDN$15/disk)
familiar with most of the more popular shareware and can provide
some support
can provide file conversion between disk formats
California Freeware

Palmdale, CA 93550
(805) 273-0300
Showroom: 14536 Roscoe Bl. #201

Very large selection
Catalog provides useful descriptions of the disks
$2.99/disk ($3.99 for 3.5") + $# P&H (+ tax for CA residents)
Cash, COD, credit cards (which ones? I dunno)
Will provide some help (NOT over the phone) but encourage you to
contact author of program first
The Software Kingdom
P. O. Box 555
Auburn, NH 03032-0555
(800) 552-DISK (orders and catalogs only, outside NH)
(603) 483-5055 (in NH, and for technical assistance)
Their catalog is on a floppy, complete with a program to read it
Large library
$4/disk ($5/3.5") + $3 S&H (next day/2nd day/COD extra)
Cheque/MO/COD/Visa/AmEx/MC
Softshoppe (formerly Klee Soft)
P. O. Box 15022
Ann Arbor, MI 48106
(313) 763-8721
No credit card orders
Purchase: $2.50/disk ($3.50/3.5")
Rent: $1/disk + deposit ($2/5-1/4", $3/3.5")
Yes, that's right, rent. Return it within 10 days, undamaged, to get
your deposit back.
Also provide disks for Macintosh
Good selection, although the catalog descriptions are far too short
Buy 9, get 1 free
Best Bits and Bytes
P. O. Box 8245
Van Nuys, CA 91409
(818) 781-9975
(800) 245-BYTE (COD/MC/Visa orders)
$3/disk ($4 for 3.5") + $3 S&H (more for COD, next day, 2nd day)
Also sell a limited selection of commercial software, large selection
of printer ribbons (must order 3 or + of same kind), generic and name
brand disks (360K, 1.2M, 720K, 1.44M)
Very large selection of disks, descriptive catalog entries~r~r
Alhuda Computer Laboratory (A.C.L.)
1621 Fulton Avenue Suite 35
Sacramento, CA 95825
(916) 973-1850
For 5.25" disks: $2.75/disk (1-20 disks), $2.50/disk (21 or +)
Add $1/disk for 3.5"
S&H: $3.50 (US), $5 (Can, Mexico, Puerto Rico), $10 (other)
Their catalog is el cheapo ... it only lists a selection of their
disks. For the whole list, you have to buy their catalog disk.
Well, that's all, folks. Thanks to those who provided some of this
information.
