Cygnus Data Systems presents the Voice Mail Card (VMC) by Daniel A. Durbin. The VMC is a full featured telephone answering system which stores digitized voice audio on the hard disk for random access use during interactive sessions with the callers. The voice digitizer operates at 8 Khz, 8 bit resolution. An option is provided to record incoming messages to an external tape recorder to allow recording of hours of incoming message recording without filling up a hard disk. The VMC will plug into any expansion slot in any IBM PC XT/AT compatible (knock on wood!). Perspective BBS has been modified for Cygnus X-1 BBS to integrate the features of the VMC and now supports both voice and data communications. The system is currently under a test and evaluation stage so not all possible features are implemented. However, callers may leave voice messages or may connect to the BBS from the same phone number (805) 541-8505. This is how it works: When a call is received, if during the first 5 seconds a touch tone is received, the VMC is activated. A short message is played and the caller may leave a message which is digitized, played back for the caller, and then deleted. If after the 5 second time-out period no touch tone is received, the modem will try to establish a data connection. Production of the VMC is planned for Summer '89 and will be in distribution by September '89 and will sell for less than $200. As testing continues, more features will be implemented on Cygnus X-1 BBS to fully demonstrate the full power and flexibility of the VMC. The VMC was designed for my senior project and has been enhanced to be offered as a viable commercial product. Cygnus Data Systems was founded in 1989 by Daniel Durbin, an EL major at Cal Poly, and is operated by college students.
