[net.music] Another viewpoint on: Attentio Classical Musical Listeners - Eat Sh*t and Die

[This is a flame. further discussion belongs on net.flame, but Mr. Ellis
made his noises here and I feel obliged to respond to them in front of
him and not behind his back.]

>	Are your gilden remarks so subtile that they must not be uttered amongst
>	common mortals? Or do you fear that the Great Clod may step on you
>	should your ludicrous pomposities be subjected to the Vulgar Lowbrow
>	Sneer?

Come off it! YOU are sneering. And maybe you're so insecure that that's all
you can do. Some of us really feel that most of the music of our time (and
probably any other) is bankrupt. Why keep us in it? Or are you afraid that
we've found something and you haven't?

>	Or is it that classical listeners suffer under the Great Disgrace that
>	has plagued the style for centuries, and feel safer hiding in secluded
>	places?

Red herring for lunch? There is no single ``style''. I hear a scapegoat
being built.

>	Where are the black classical composers? How many women classical
>	composers can YOU recall? (there have been so few (Germaine Francaise,
>	anybody?) that atrocities like `composerette' never occurred!)

There are several standard flame techniques here. One is guilt by
association. Another is the inflammatory Red Herring. Turn this into
an argument on the Great Class Struggle and absolve yourself of responsibility
for what you are about to say or do.

>	Considering the huge amount of sweat that the jewish people have
>	poured into classical over the centuries, how come it is hard to
>	think of even one jewish composer? Remember -- Mahler had to renounce
>	Judaism to attain the status he did!

So did Mendelssohn. But that's beside the point. Would you tear down the
Parthenon becasue the Greeks had slaves? The music matters. Ultimately and
finaly, there is the music. Alone.

>	Is classical separatism on the net symptomatic of the bigotry that has
>	characterized the style since its inception centuries ago?

No. It is the desire of some folk not to hear what you have to say at the
moment. Is your ego so bloated that you would flame over this? How
about kill? You are getting awfully violent over not getting your way.

>	This world will probably blow itself up over the elitist forces that
>	appear to be thriving at classical concerts. Perhaps it is feared that
>	cross fertilization with other musical awarenesses might add life to
>	the pure sterility that seems to obsess our life-hating upper classes.

Oh the sound of a class struggle! Cross-fertilization? Listen to Copland's
Symphony for Organ and Orchestra! Or are you afraid of exposure to someone
else's tastes? Do you feel the need to reject the things that were done before
you were around? Do you begrudge someone having fun in a backyard that you
don't police?

>	If you people will not converse among the public throng,
>	then please, to munge Jelloisms, aryan androphiles, f[...] off!

I'll be happy to let you hear what I say. But I want to hear my friends over
your flatulence. f[...] off yourself!

>	WITHOUT producing offspring, that is...

Rock music could sterilize a rabbit at half a mile. Classical won't :-)
