Recently, I added a line in config.sys to use driver.sys in IBM DOS 3.2 during the boot sequence, to allow either a PC to format a 3.5" disk to 720K, or to allow an external drive to work when new hard drives were installed in two XT's. Now I have a problem with the Seagate hard drives in these machines (ST-225 and ST-238R). When calling the first application after boot, the drive will growl, and then DOS reports "sector not found reading drive..." Directories are OK, just the first load of an executable is sour. Sometimes 'retry' will get past the error, sometimes not. This is pretty baffling to me- can loading an external floppy driver during boot cause the hard drive to be angry later? The only thing that makes me think so is the fact that four machines have had the same error after using driver.sys. I have already grabbed SDF from CompuServe, and put it to work formatting 720K 3.5" disks in two PC's with internal drives I installed, and hard drive errors have disappeared in these machines. However, SDF will not function with external drives, such as is the case with two XT's in which I installed new ST-238R's. These are still complaining, and loudly at times, too. What I need to know is: does there exist a way to read, write, AND format 3.5" disks in an external drive, AND allow a hard drive to peacefully co-exist with it? Thanks. --------------------------\ /------------------------------------------ INTERNET:tindle@ms.uky.edu | "I heard you." -Kirk BITNET:tindle@ukma.bitnet | "He simply could not believe his ears."
