Hi, I have a problem with my mouse connected to IBM PS/2 - 50. (My mouse is MSC Technologies optical three-button mouse.) The system ocasionally, not always, shows one of the following error codes, 301, 302, 8601, 8602 or some combination of the above at the boot time after RAM check (1024K OK). Or sometimes it finishes booting process, but the mouse is installed on COM 1: (Port 3FB IRQ 04) erroneously. It should be installed on Pointing Device Port. Then I retry booting by powering-off-and-on (Ctl-Alt-Del sometimes does not cure the problem). Usually, it becomes OK. When it went wrong, I checked the system with the Reference Diskette supplied by IBM, putting the diskette and Ctl-Alt-Del. This displays 8602 : Error in the mouse. or something like that. When either 301 or 302 appears, it always appears with either 8601 and 8602. Both 301 and 302 mean the keyboard error for IBM PCs and IBM PS/2's. After all I can conclude that the computer fails to self-test the Input Device Port. So I disconnected the mouse and have observed the booting behavior of the system. Those error message has never appeared since then. So I am confident that I located the problem area correctly. One of my friends who has an IBM clone and Mouse System's serial mouse told me that he has never had such problem. So I guess that IBM PS/2's keyboard-mouse interface is weaker than the RS232-C serial port interface and vulnerable to initial power-up overshoot of the optical mouse's LED bias current. Actually I've seen IBM PS/2-60 showing the same problem with the *original* IBM mouse. Have you ever had the same problem with the IBM PS/2 machines? Is there any cure for this problem? Thanks. G.
