[comp.sys.ibm.pc] EGA monitors

vo@micomvax.UUCP (Vladimir Orlt) (01/05/89)

I am in the market for an EGA monitor. The main reasons I want
such a monitor is (1) to run software which will not run with a CGA (which
is what I presently have), such as Personal Composer (a music notation/
sequencer program) and (2) to explore the artistic posibilities of computer
graphics. I have asked someone who has an EGA and he suggests getting a
monitor without full multisync capability (expensive) but with 'switchable'
sync capability which could support e.g. both an IBM EGA card and a Hercules
card, etc... based on DIP swith settings.
I have not started shopping around yet as I figured I would get
some facts first. I am thinking of spending about $500 CDN for such a
monitor (option card excluded).
	I have an IBM-PC clone (Philips P3100 = 4.77 Mhz 8088) which is a
low-performance machine; I have considered upgrading to an AT but the fact that
the P3100 has depreciated so incredibly over the years is holding me back.
Anyway, I am presently using the machine very little. I am fairly certain that
the P3100 would not run faster than 4.77 Mhz in a reliable fashion.
I would like your comments/opinions/suggestions/experiences, etc.
regarding monitors and video option cards. Also, I would like to hear from
anyone involved in artistic applications of computer graphics at the PC/AT
level.
Feel free to E-mail. Thanks in advance.

These sequencer programs aren't up to Mac quality on the PC as yet
(unfortunately).

Ha ha ha. With how many colors did you say? Maybe you should be
looking for VGA... The Samsung VGA monitor is $350 and the EGA is
$320, so you might as well.

I've recently had problems with two different monitors.

One was a CompuAdd monitor which gave off fumes for two weeks that caused
headaches and sinus problems. The monitor was replaced with another that did
the exact same thing.

The second type of monitor was a Samsung. This monitor appeared to give off a
smell that was relatively harmless, but after three weeks it caused throat
aches.

The two reasons given for the above cases were sealants and power resistor
resins, which were said to disappear in 48-72 hours of continuous use. Having
left all the monitors on for more than that, and then using them for 8 hour
stretches, the above symptoms were still produced.

Has anyone run into this problem before?
Do you know what it could be?
What did you do to solve the problem?

I suspect I've entered the World of Cheap EGA Monitors, and it's annoying.
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
