[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Help: power supply for Japan?

sgreene@Portia.Stanford.EDU (Spencer Greene) (05/10/89)

I'll be taking a Compaq SLT/286 to Japan in a few months.
The recharger is autoswitching, but the spec sheet says it's
rated for 110-60 Hz or 220-50 Hz. Anybody out there want to
explain to me how these autoswitching supplies work -- specifically,
what it will do to it to run on 100v 50 Hz in Japan, whether it
will still put out 18.3v nominal or close to it, and if not,
whether it will affect the lifetime of the NiCad to charge at
a different voltage? 4.7 years of EE training and I can crank
on linear systems, BCH codes, etc., but am lost when it comes
to anything electrical!

PS -- my dealer has been no help, so pls. don't refer me to him.

Thanks,
spencer
