[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 2400 baud modem advice

gupta@bach.csg.uiuc.edu (Aloke Gupta) (05/12/89)

Could someone advise me on a good and reasonably priced 2400 baud modem.
I have an ancient IBM PC and am currently using a Migent (1200 baud)
	external modem.

Questions: 1. What are the advantages of an internal modem apart from
the convenience of having no extra wires etc. Are they
more / less reliable than external modems ?

		   2. Is there any advantage to getting an error correcting
modem. There seems to be a substantial price difference.

		   3. I wonder if there is a recent survey article out there
in some magazine about the current crop of modems.

	   	   4. I am told that there is a new chip set which has reduced
the chip count needed to make a modem. Does someone know
about the new modems which use this chip set ?

An external modem may be used on another computer. If you upgrade your
system you can still use it, if you upgrade your modem you have a better
chance of selling it. An internal modem *may* be slightly cheaper.

If you have e.c. on the other end it's great on a noisy line. You can
use screen editors and stuff without garbage on the screen. Many BBS
systems use them, and when I add e.c. modes I got about 15 people who
said "Hey, CONNECT RELIABLE, great!" so I guess other people are using
it to call.

Good modems are cheap these days. My wife sells Micon 2400 external
with MNP4 for $160, and I imagine that you can get a similar price in
your area with a little looking.

I don't know about your mailer, but mine doesn't like addresses with
two @'s. Something about RFC822... hope this is of general interest.
