[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PCTOOLS and NORTON COMMANDER question

vu0112@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Cliff Joslyn) (05/13/89)

NC:

What cost do I incur running NCSMALL? Increased swapping?

How do I get NC to *not* cd to the directory I leave it in? e.g. I
enter NC, move around, say to root, and when I exit I want it to leave
me where I started from.

PCTOOLS:

DESKTOP is *very* flaky. When I boot under COMMAND.COM, 'switch -' (MKS
util to set switchar) makes it *bomb*. It never comes up. I isolated
it to that after booting under COMMAND.COM, removing all TSRs and EMS.

PCSHELL *always* says "Cannot find overlay", when pcshell.ovl is sitting
there in plain sight and the manual says it's only needed for PCSHELL in
TSR mode anyway. . .

Thanks

PCTools has several problems when the switchar is -. I believe Desktop
will run only if you invoke it from a directory other than the one it is in.
PCShell will never run. Compress will run, but can't find its help
file. There are a few other anomlies, too.

I called Central Point Software and reported the problems I found. I
suspect they will fix them only if enough customers complain. So I
suggest you call them,

Meanwhile, I have a batch file that makes the switchar a /, runs the
PCTool of my choice, then restores the switchar to -. If you want your
tools loaded as TSRs, I'm not sure this will work.
