Several weeks ago, I posted a message requesting info on TeX for the PC. I got deluged with the same, from many many people. Thanks to all of you. For the benefit of anybody who ever wants to know this again, here's a summary of what I found out: There are two PD TeX packages for DOS: DOSTEX and SBTEX. DOSTEX is much larger and requires 640k to run [I haven't had a chance to test any of this, so this is all hearsay.] SBTEX requires only 512k and runs much faster, so that although it doesn't allow preloads [if this is garbled, please bear in mind that I don't know much of anything about TeX yet], it loads LaTeX et al. fast enough that it doesn't really matter. Found several viewers, for CGA, Hercules, EGA, and VGA. The largest is DVIVGA, which occupies several HUGE arc files. DVIEW and CDVI12 are the other two I found. Just about anything else you need can be found on science (see list below), including printer drivers, various conversion utilities, and several interesting-looking files that I haven't had the time to figure out what they do yet. :-) Here's the list of what's available from where: simtel20.army.mil in directory pd1:<msdos.tex> TENEX BIBTEX99.ARC, CDVI12.ARC, DOSTEX[1..6].ARC, DVIEW.ARC, DVIVGA.INF, DVIVGA[1..9].ARC, HP2TEX.ARC, PCWRITEX.ARC, SBTEX.ARC, WEB.ARC note that, if you have problems doing anonymous FTP from simtel (as I do), these files can be gotten from the trickle server at LISTSERV@RPIECS on BITNET, using the syntax: /PDGET MAIL PD1:<directory name>file name (UUE which causes it to send you the named file by mail in uuencoded format, usually in many pieces which must be concatenated. Unfortunately, the server is a bit finicky and, worse, has a very low limit on how many bytes of files you can order per day -- I found I couldn't get more than one per day. b.scs.uiuc.edu file DVIVGA.EXE 128.174.90.2 venus.ycc.yale.edu file SBTEX.ARC also lost of interesting-looking directories, but I kept getting the message "Access not allowed for anonymous account." Annoying, to say the least. june.cs.washington.edu in directory TEX some LaTex stuff, some fonts, PiCTeX science.utah.edu in directory aps:<tex> 128.110.192.2 THE REAL MOTHER LOAD! Printer drivers, both TENEX source and executable, for many varieties of dot- matrix printer. Various conversion utilities. Megs upon megs of fonts, more than just about anybody will every want, need, or be able to put on their hard drives. :-) Manuals. a.cs.uiuc.edu in directory pub/TeX 128.174.5.20 dvips, PiCTeX, tr2latex, other stuff cayuga.cs.rochester.edu in directory pub/latex-style 129.5.53.209 various LaTeX style pages score.stanford.edu directories <TEX.*> 36.8.0.46 AMSFONTS, AMSTEX, BIBTEX, CM, DOC, GF, TENEX INPUTS, LATEX, LN03, MF, TEST, TEXHAX, TUGBOAT, WEB looks like a fair amount of good stuff here, too -- more fonts especially sun.soe.clarkson.edu assorted stuff in directory pub 128.153.12.3 The two best sources I found were SIMTEL and SCIENCE. Hope this helps somebody. Being written at 2:30AM, I also hope that it's comprehensible. :-) -- James W.
